This 2.5 day course focuses on factors affecting the performance of portable and laboratory radiation detection instruments. The course is designed for radiation detection users, supervisors and managers of users, and quality assurance personnel with responsibilites related to instrument use. This course is unique in that it emphasizes user verification of the performance aspects of detection instruments. The course addresses instrument selection, factors influencing proper calibration and operation, variables in the measurements made by an instrument, and the frequency and type of performance checks.

The course is based on applicable current regulations such as 10 CFRs, ANSI Standards, NUREGS, NCRPs, ICRP/ICRU and IEEE transactions. The performance standards set forth in ANSI N4217A are reviewed as a basis for the discussion on performance checks. NCRP-112 and ICRU-47, both of which address calibration and use of instruments to measure dose equivalent-related quantities, are the principal support reports for the course.

This course will be given the same week and location as our Radiation Safety Officer Refresher course. For attendees who want to take both courses, the total cost for both courses will be $1190, a considerable discount off the courses priced individually.

HOTEL INFORMATION: The course will be given at the La Quinta Inn at 3970 Paradise Road in Las Vegas, NV. If you reserve your room at least 30 days in advance, the hotel has agreed to offer a special rate of $108 per night. This is a good rate for Las Vegas, and has the added convenience of being in the same hotel as the meeting room. The hotel phone number is 702-796-9000. When you call the hotel, it is best to ignore the automated option that mentions reservations. If you select that option, you will be transferred to central reservations in San Antonio and they usually don't have information about our special rates. When the recorded message starts, select the option for Sales and you will be transferred to the Sales Department. Ask for Susan in Sales to get the special rate. If you have any trouble getting this rate, please call us at Nevada Technical and we will help you. Please note that if you make reservations through a travel agent, the special rate may not be available because often the travel agency takes a commission.

Room rates for hotels vary widely in Las Vegas depending on demand. The Internet is a good source of room rate information. If you have trouble finding a reasonably priced room, we can make suggestions.

This course has been approved for 32 continuing education units by the American Academy of Health Physics. We will also apply for units from any other organization if requested.
