RSO qualifications and Training

Education: N/A RSO Training: 40-hour RSO

Experience: Supervised OJT on operating procedures, emergency procedures, maintenance, and lock-out procedures

Rad workers: Rad Worker training and OJT on SOPs for operators

Facilities: Must be adequate to protect health and to secure the source against loss or theft. Environment must fall within “Conditions of normal use” on source certificate

Radiation Safety Program Components

Dosimetry: Not required if applicant submits a prospective evaluation showing personnel are not likely to receive a radiation dose in excess of any limits.

Instrumentation: Not normally required for routine operations unless licensee installs, relocates, dismantles, aligns, or undertakes other activities that would call for performing radiation and/or contamination surveys upon completion

Surveys: (10 CFR 20.1501) Frequently performed by contractor.

Sealed source inventory and leak testing: Required every 6 months; leak testing may be performed by licensee and counted by vendor or can all be performed by vendor.

Program audit: Annual (by internal or external auditor)

Procedures: Required to develop and use security procedures, operating procedures and emergency response procedures for each type of fixed gauge

Radioactive package receiving: Required to have SOP

Radioactive materials accountability: Inventory every 6 months

Other considerations: Sources are often placed in harsh environments

Records retention

Receipt records: 3 years following transfer or disposal of source

Inventory: 5 years

Source transfer: 3 years following transfer or disposal of source

Disposal: Until license terminated

Important to decommissioning: Until site released for unrestricted use

Dosimetry: Until license terminated
