RSO qualifications

Education: N/A RSO Training: 40-hour RSO (10CFR 34.43)

Experience: Qualified radiographer w/ 2000 hrs hands-on experience with radiography device, instruments, and sealed sources

Radiographer’s assistant qualification: Hands-on experience under supervision of radiographer, transportation trng, licensee-specific trng, annual rad safety refresher

Facilities: Source/camera storage, permanent radiographic installation (shielded room)

Radiation Safety Program Components

Dosimetry: Radiographer and assistant (dose of record, direct-reading dosimeter, and alarming dosimeter)

Instrumentation: Ionization chamber(s) and/or energy-compensated GM (6-mo cal)

Surveys: (10CFR 34.49) Survey camera and guide tube after each exposure

Sealed source inventory and leak testing: Semi-annual (sources), quarterly (DU shield)

Program audit: Annual (internal or external auditor)

Packaging, Transportation, Shipping: Training required every 3 years for all personnel transporting sources on public roads

Radioactive package receiving: Required to have SOP

Radioactive materials accountability: Inventory every 6 months; sign sources in and out when they are removed from storage room

Other considerations: Sources can be dangerously radioactive; it is essential that sources are secured against loss or theft at all times



Records retention

Receipt records: 3 years

Inventory: 3 years

Source transfer: 3 years

Disposal: Until license terminated

Important to decommissioning: Until site released for unrestricted use

Dosimetry: Until license terminated
