It can be difficult even for experienced health physicists to find clear, consistent information about the different types of radioactive materials licenses and what each requires. NRC and Agreement State guidance is scattered across multiple regulations and NUREG documents, and there is no federal guidance for radiation safety programs that use radiation-generating equipment.
To address this, NTA has developed a set of concise License Profiles—summaries of regulatory expectations, RSO qualifications, and core components of radiation safety programs for common license types. These profiles help both radiation safety professionals and organizations understand what regulators look for and how programs should be structured. They also illustrate NTA’s depth of experience in developing and supporting radioactive materials licenses for a wide range of users.
Each profile includes the applicable NRC and state regulations, RSO and authorized user qualifications, program components such as dosimetry, instrumentation, and audits, and recordkeeping requirements. Together, they provide a consistent reference for anyone responsible for radiation safety compliance.
Available License Profiles
Portable Gauges – Field use, transportation, and safety program requirements for portable gauge licensees.
Nuclear Pharmacy – Licensing, facility, and personnel qualification standards for preparation and dispensing of radiopharmaceuticals.
Licenses of Limited Scope (Academic, R&D, Training) – Small-scale programs such as universities, R&D facilities, and emergency responder training operations.
Each profile is provided as a standalone reference and may be updated periodically as NRC and Agreement State guidance changes. For organizations preparing new applications or revising existing licenses, NTA offers consulting assistance with license development, program documentation, and regulatory submissions.
